An Argentine woman died after she reportedly injected herself with Vaseline in an attempt to give herself a chest augmentation.
Sonia Perez Llanzon, 39, suffered a pulmonary embolism — or blot clot in her lungs — and died several weeks after she reportedly injected herself with the petroleum jelly, according to a Huffington Post translation of La Capital.
In an article dated March 18, the Argentine newspaper reports that Llanzon went to a Santa Rosa hospital after she developed difficulty breathing. Doctors said she initially denied injecting herself, but later admitted that she’d tried to give herself a chest augmentation.
“In all my medical career, I’ve never seen a case like this. The human body has antibodies to remove bacteria and viruses, but it hasn’t got any mechanisms against this type of product,” Julio Pla Cardenas, chief of surgery at Lucio Molas Hospital in Santa Rosa said, according to Sipse.com
The Vaseline entered the woman’s blood stream, where it caused blood clots that eventually traveled to her lungs, doctors said. Llanzon died as a result of pulmonary embolism following a month-long hospitalization.
An exact date of death was not given in the La Capital report, but a Facebook post by her son, Kevin Berazategui, indicates that Llanzon died March 6.
“It has been two days since you haven’t been here in this world… I will love you forever. The 20 years I spent by your side were beautiful,” Berazategui wrote in a Facebook post dated March 8, according to a HuffPost translation. “I’m going to live my life as a demonstration of your efforts as a fighter, as my lion-hearted mother.”
Llanzon is remembered as an athlete, a marathon runner and a boxer.
