Emir Sanusi Makes His First Official Visit Outside His Kano Domain

The newly-elected Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, made his first official visit outside his Kano domain. The emir made a short visit to the Sultanate of Sokoto on June 23, 2014, Monday.

The monarch landed in Sokoto in the morning and was immediately transferred to the palace of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III.

According to tradition, this visit was essential for the new rules of Kano in order to launch his presence and authority. HRH Sanusi will now commence functioning fully within and outside his domain as the Emir of Kano.

"As natural leaders of the people and our fathers, we expect you to be courageous, firm and fearless in ensuring one peaceful indivisible Nigeria," Wamakko told Sanusi in his welcome speech.

According to commonly-accepted hierarchy, the Emir of Kano is behind the Sultan of Sokoto in terms of influence, but ahead of the Shehu of Borno due to bigger population of the state. Kano has undoubted religious, socio-economic and political significance in the whole region of sub-Saharan Africa.

However, according to another classification, Kano is fourth in the Islamic hierarchy of the Northern Nigerian Hausa-Fulani Islamic structure, being behind Sokoto, Gwandu, and Bornu. Kano, however, has its own significance as the most populous of the emirates in the north, and indeed in.

The current monarch of Borno, Shehu Abubakar Garbai Ibni Elkanemi, was also visiting Sokoto State on Monday.
