Three armed men reportedly shot at a hotelier, Sunny Okonye, in Agbor, Delta State, on May 19, 2014, Monday, for allegedly defacing the billboard of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, a governorship aspirant in the state.
In a reaction to the alleged incident, the state Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, on Wednesday at a press conference in Asaba, while condemning the attack, urged politicians to allow peace to reign and shun overheating the polity for personal reasons.
The victim, who miraculously escaped being killed said the assailants overtook his car along Isede Street while as he was returning from a community meeting, and shot at him inside the car.
He confirmed that he was shot on the chest, claiming that he recognise one of the attackers as the senator's aide who gave the ordered for him to be killed for destroying the senator's billboard erected at the College of Education junction.
Responding, the senator's aide refuted the claims, saying he left Agbor last Friday for Lagos and from there he went to Abuja on Monday, and asked how he could have been involved in such attack on Sunday.
"On Friday, I left Asaba with the distinguished Senator via Arik Air to Lagos, where we checked into a hotel. We left Lagos for Abuja on Monday. So, can I be in Lagos and at the same time be in Delta?" he asked.
Reacting, the Okonye's in a statement signed by the head of the family, Pedro Olije condemned the alleged attack, and called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the incident in order to avoid a cover-up of such a heinous crime.
"The fleeing assailants trailed our son to No 20, Isede Street and opened fire on him at a close range on the mere suspicion that he was one of those persons who allegedly defaced the billboard of the said governorship aspirant, which was mounted at the College of Education junction, Agbor" he said. "We have investigated and found out that our son was not in any way involved in the alleged defacing of the billboard".
