More than 20 female students of Benue State University, Makurdi, were on Sunday robbed and raped by suspected cult members who invaded their hostel.
Some of the female students who were raped at gunpoint said the assailants stormed the Technical Block of female hostel about 10.00 p.m, adding that after beating them up, the assailants carted away with their valuables.
The victims said that the university security operatives declined to come to their aid as the armed men abused and brutalised them during the operation.
A source, who didn't want her name mentioned revealed that the recent attack made it the third in the last one month, said a female student who was coming back from where she had gone to read around 9.00 p.m. was gang-raped a week ago by four young men.
She also revealed that a 100-level female student was shot on campus three weeks ago by unknown gunmen, whom carted away the victims iPad, phones and undisclosed amount of money.
Meanwhile, the female students in a reaction protested to the office of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Charity Angya, asking why they were always the victims of the attacks.
Responding, Angya assured the female students of adequate security, and went to the female hostel with the protesting students. She said about seven of the female students who sustained injuries during the attack, have been taken to the university health centre for medical attention.
Professor Armstrong Adejoh, the Dean of Students Affairs, who confirmed the incident, reiterated that it was only an internal security issue.
Adejoh disclosed that the school would partner with relevant security agencies in order to beef up security around the hostels.
