The Boko Haram group attacked people in Kumuyya village, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State killing at least 20 on Sunday afternoon, May 25.
A military source disclosed that the assailants with assault rifles and explosives began to shot into the people who gathered to trade in Kamuyya village open air market. They reportedly killed about 20 people on the spot and burnt most of the shops in the market.
Eyewitnesses stated that the insurgents had visited the town about two months ago and demanded the village to contribute the sum of N250,000 for them in order to execute God's work.
But, the residents had only managed to raised N70,000, a situation that angered the insurgents.
Reportedly, they threatened to return and collect the balance, warning the community to either heed to their demand within a stipulated period or face deadly attack.
On Thursday, May 22, suspected Boko Haram gunmen rampaged through three villages in the state killing 28 people and burning houses.
