Just as the remains of the victims of the previous devastating Jos twin explosion were buried yesterday, yet another blast rocked the Plateau State capital at about 9 p.m. today. Police have confirmed deaths of at least three persons so far.
The explosion occurred along Bauchi Road, near the old University of Jos Teaching Hospital in Jos North local government area.
In an interview with AFP, Chris Olakpe, the commissioner of police for Plateau state, said at least three persons lost their lives, while three were injured in the blast. He disclosed that one of the casualties was "consumed by his IED [improvised explosive device]" but declined to confirm reports that it was an attempted suicide attack.
Earlier, security agents who arrived at the scene of the incident, said the suicide bomber was the only person who died. The team said the bomb he was transporting went off before he could reach his destination, a viewing center where hundreds gathered to watch today's football game, European Champions League final (Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid). The bomber's body was recovered from a Vectra car without registration number.
Previously, the fact of explosion was confirmed by the officials of Plateau State police command and the National Emergency Management Agency, also by the state government representatives. They, however, could not give any details. Firthermore, according to the report by the AFP, the casualty figure might be higher than reported by the officials, as the venue was packed.
Also, Twitter users say the attack is actually a series of three explosions:
#UPDATE [10:26 PM] @NewsBytesNow: Update: A second and third explosion heard minutes apart in Jos @Gidi_Traffic #JosBombBlast
- GIDITRAFFIC (@Gidi_Traffic) May 24, 2014
It would be recalled that hundreds of Jos residents were killed four days ago on May 20 in a series of two explosions at the city's crowded Terminus market.
This is what Twitter users have to say today's attack:
Who has evidence? How's it even possible for Jos to be bombed YET AGAIN in a matter of DAYS? Surely we must have the semblance of a SYSTEM.
