Policeman Accused Of Allegedly Stealing Widow’s N670,000 Exhibit

A widow has accused a policeman, Emmanuel Nkere of stealing N670, 000 exhibit and converting it to his personal use. The widow, Mrs Sandra Peters, whose money the policeman had turned to his own had reported a case of fraud at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, in 2010 that she had borrowed one banker some amount of money but refused to pay back. Unknown to her, the banker who was arrested was made to pay back his debt, and Nkere, who was the Investigating Police Officer, recovered the money from the banker but he refused to give her the money. She got to know of the development after she kept on disturbing her debtor who in turn said he had paid back the money in full with proofs to show the payment. The widow on realising the policeman was not ready to part away with the money wrote a petition to the police and the matter was transferred to the SCID, Lagos, in December 2010, wrote another petition to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the SCID on November 26, 2013 then finally to the Commissioner of Police, Force Provost, Force Headquarters Annex, Kam Salem House, Obalende on February 4, 2014. Peters, however said the policeman gave her N40,000 two months later, but then refused to pay any money for several months. Peters who disturbed the policeman several months for her money said Nkere kept telling her due process must be followed as he had registered the money at exhibit department of the SCID. However, the widow who said she lost her husband in 2013 after he fell ill and was not able to raise money for his treatment went back to meet the policeman for some money but was unlucky as she said he came making excuses and did not give her a dime. The policeman, after so much pressure gave her another N145, 000 in piecemeal but she said :“All I want is my money because I am out of options. I am still being owed N485, 000”. A police source, however said that the money in question was not registered as exhibit. Meanwhile the policeman who confirmed he collected such money said:Indeed, I recovered money for Sandra (Peters), but before I could register it as exhibit, a friend of mine, Inspector James, begged me to lend him the money. “I have bank tellers to prove that I have paid most of the money back. I think all that remains now is just about N150, 000. Also, I did not know that Sandra’s (peter’s) husband was sick. I fear God, if I had known, I would have given her something.” The Police spokesperson, Frank Mba, is yet to comment on the matter.
