American Security Operation Can't Eradicate Boko Haram's Threat-Obama

U.S President Barack Obama seems to have realised the enormous threat posed by the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, not only to Nigeria but also the world at large.

Speaking during his commencement address to the U.S. Military Academy's graduating class at West Point on Wednesday, the Kenyan born American president stated that 'no American security operation can eradicate the threat posed by Boko Haram'.

In his words: "Tragically, no American security operation can eradicate the threat posed by an extremist group like Boko Haram, the group that kidnapped those girls, and that's why we have to focus not just on rescuing those girls right away, but also on supporting Nigerian efforts to educate its youth."
It could be recalled that more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped in April and later showed up in a propaganda video Boko Haram made, showing them in Islamic garb with an al Qaeda banner hanging behind them.

Also on Monday, it was reported that the group killed 31 security personnel, security sources and witnesses at a Nigerian military base in Buni Yadi.

The attack was said to have taken place not far from where insurgents shot or burned to death 59 students at a boarding school in February.

"Regional aggression that goes unchecked - whether in southern Ukraine or in the south China Sea or anywhere else in the world - will ultimately impact our allies and could draw in our military. We can't ignore what happens beyond our boundaries," Obama said.
"And beyond these narrow rationales, I believe we have a real stake, abiding self-interest in making sure our children and our grandchildren grow up in a world where schoolgirls are not kidnapped and where individuals are not slaughtered because of tribe or faith or political belief," Obama added.

The UN Security Council blacklisted Boko Haram last week and also approved sanctions against it.

Boko Haram Insurgents Steal Food Items To Feed Chibok Girls

Recently, Boko Haram insurgents invaded a lot of villages close to Sambisa Forest in the North East in order to steal food items allegedly to feed the abducted girls.

In the past weeks, the Islamic terrorist group stepped up the looting of villages, markets and food stores in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states for food items including grains and bread, according to Saturday Punch investigations.

Residents of these communities disclosed that the insurgents were usually satisfied when communities raised money for them towards "God's work," but lately they had stepped up their activities by invading the villages and carting away food items.

With the pressure on Nigerian soldiers to clamp down on the Islamic sect, it was learnt that the insurgents no longer felt safe to go to markets to buy food items for fear of being arrested.

Some of the insurgents recently met their waterloo in Madagali, Adamawa State, where they were given up by a local food vendor from whom they had planned to buy foodstuffs. Reportedly, members of a vigilance group pounced on them and killed over 70 of them while seven others were handed over to the police.

Residents of Limankara, Kamuyya, Kirenowa, Kimba and Makor communities in Borno State said the insurgents usually carried away food items and livestock after killing people in their areas in recent attacks.

The scenario of these attacks are always the same. The heavily armed terrorists invade the village, open fire into the crowd killing innocent residents, start burning houses, shops and vehicles and stealing foodstuff.

During these endless attacks, dozens of people were killed as the hoodlums were well armed with sophisticated weapons.

In Kamuyya village, Borno state, a resident, Bukar Umar, said over 20 insurgents, who must have emerged from the bush, stormed the Kamuyya weekly market when traders were conducting their businesses and opened fire into the crowd before setting shops and vehicles on fire. Twenty people were killed on the spot and almost all the shops were burnt in the market.

The insurgents on Sunday intercepted a vehicle loaded with bread, killed the four occupants and drove the vehicles towards Sambisa Forest. The vehicle, which was on its way to Polka from Gwoza, was attacked at Waraba village.

Recently, Nigerian journalist, Ahmad Salkida, who is trusted by both the Federal Government and the Boko Haram leader as a mediator, allegedly visited the camp where the abducted schoolgirls were being kept.

According to Sakilda, who claimed to have seen the abducted schoolgirls, they are "well fed and adequately sheltered."

It was gathered during the week that the insurgents resorted to stealing following the shortage of food to feed themselves and their hostages.

It was also learnt that the violent sect had begun to pile up food items in preparation for a long drawn battle with the military, especially as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Israel and other foreign collaborators are assisting the Federal Government to ensure the safe return of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls.

With the allied forces believed to be on the ground to help the Nigerian military rescue the girls, it was learnt that the insurgents did not want to be caught unawares by running out of strategic resources, especially food.

Unconfirmed reports had indicated that certain helicopters used to drop food items and other needs in the Sambisa stronghold of the Boko Haram group.

Security experts said the growing focus on the Sambisa forest must have disrupted the routine of the helicopters, thus putting pressure on the group's supply chain and fueling more attacks on villagers in the North-East.

Why Boko Haram Didn’t Disturb My Government – Obasanjo

Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday affirmed that he would be willing to play an intermediary role in efforts to locate and rescue the over 200 Chibok school girls still in Boko Haram custody.

He, however, said he cannot wade in without the go-ahead of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Obasanjo made this known in an interview aired last night on Channels television.

Recall that President of the Civil Rights Congress, CRC, and renowned independent mediator in the Boko Haram imbroglio, Comrade Shehu Sani had on Thursday confirmed that he attended a meeting convened by the ex-president in Abeokuta.

Sani had said in a statement that the meeting was attended by families of the Boko Haram sect members with the aim of opening new channels of communication.

Obasanjo told Channels he was "surprised at how certain meetings have turned out".

"I cannot have a plan without the Presidency being involved", he added, denying claims that he was "going on a one man mission". He insisted that it would be "idiotic" for him to have done so.

The former president noted that he was put on the back pedal with Sani's statement informing the state and national authorities that a meeting had taken place and admitted that he owed the government an apology for that.

"I have to involve the President and he also tells me this is what we are doing or this is what we are pursuing either in addition or along with what we are doing or not", he said.

On the allegation that the abduction of the girls was a plan by opponents to bring down the present administration, Obasanjo said: "If the Presidency is obsessed with one thing and one thing only and any other thing of concern to Nigeria is secondary, then the Presidency will take that position", which he said "will be unfortunate".

Obasanjo explained that "Boko Haram (sect) has been in existence for years…they didn't disturb my government because when I was in government I did not disturb their Sharia", adding: "Sharia is part of our constitution".

Reacting to the statement by Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Marshal Alex Badeh that where the abducted girls are being kept had been located, Obasanjo urged the military authorities not to engage in public relations stunts with the issue.

He said: "This is not an issue that you will play Public Relations propaganda with. It is a serious issue that is like a spear in the heart of the parents and whatever statement we make and action we take, if it will not really deal with the issue in a way that will bring those girls out safe and secure and make their families happy and will also give every Nigerian a sense of security, then such statements should not be made".

He added that the American forces have the capability to confirm or debunk the statement made by the CDS but remarked, "I will be pleasantly surprised if those girls are returned intact".

Man Wakes From Coma, Tells Girlfriend ”I Don’t Know You, But I know I Love You”

He was left unconscious with a severe brain injury, broken ribs, collapsed lungs and a shattered spine.

His family and girlfriend were told he wasn't going to make it.

But on waking up from a 10-day coma and seeing his girlfriend, Stewart Fryett said: "I don't know who you are, I don't know your name – but I know I love you."

Stewart, 39, and Chrissie Fryett, 32, are now married, living in Fairfield, Stockton, and expecting their first child in July this year.

But it has taken five years of painful recovery and legal battles for the couple to finally begin enjoying life.

It was on June 13 2009 that the dad-of-five was at a family barbecue at the house of then girlfriend, Chrissie.

Stewart, dad to Leah, 19, Andrew, 18, Jessica, 16, Abbie, 13, and Mackenzie, eight, told Gazette Live: "We had only been seeing each other for six months.

"I was at Chrissie's house with her stepfather and mum and a family friend, Ian, had come round to see us."

Stewart and friend Jason Dale went for a drive in 50-year-old Ian Burton's new Ford Focus RS at 9.15pm.

Just 200 yards down the road, Ian lost control of his car and collided with a BMW as it turned a corner on Beckfields Avenue in Ingleby Barwick, near Middlesborough.

Ian got out and immediately called the emergency services while Jason, unable to open the damaged passenger door, climbed into the driver's seat and out of the driver side door.

Stewart, however had suffered a severe brain injury and was trapped in the back seat, unconscious.

Chrissie said: "We got a phone call from Ian saying they had been in an accident, we thought he was joking because they had only been gone a few minutes."

Chrissie arrived to see firefighters cut Stewart free and then take him to James Cook University Hospital.

The 72-year-old driver of the other car involved was also taken to hospital suffering from chest and neck pains.

Chrissie said: "He was in a coma for 10 days. We were all told he wasn't going to make it.

"When he came round he couldn't lift his head up and he just talked gobbledygook.

"When he came out of it he still didn't know who anyone was, but when he saw me he said, 'I don't know who you are, I don't know what your name is but I know I love you.'"

He was finally discharged from hospital on September 23, 2009 but was severely disabled and required a high level of care and assistance which was provided by friends and family.

Stewart gradually recovered over the next four years and married Chrissie in September 2013 and she is currently expecting their first child in July.

16-Year Old Boy Murders Parents Because They Seized His IPhone

16 year old Vincent Parker pleaded guilty yesterday to murdering his parents Carol and Wayne Parker last December.

The boy says that there was no specific fight that prompted the brutal MURDER. The sadistic killer told authorities, 'I just remember getting mad,' Parker told the court. 'It's all from my dad. All this stuff like my dad taking away my iPod and stuff.'

The story gets worse. Vincent was an only child being raised by his hard working parents Carol, 57, and father Wayne, 55, in their Norfolk, Virginia home.

They did everything right – they lived in a good neighborhood, and helped Vincent become an honor roll student.

But he boy snapped one day . . . and turned into a moster. On December 19, 2013 Vincent left school early while his dad was still at work. He showed up at the family home and surprised his mother – by dousing her in pepper spray.

While the 57 year old woman was blinded and unable to defend herself, Vincent stabbed his mother in the eye, and then beat her with a crowbar and metal baseball bat 'until she stopped breathing'. A medical examiner noted 25 separate smashes and stabs on Mrs Parker's neck, face and head.

The animal then waited patiently over his dead mother's body until his father came in the house. He surprised his dad and hit him in the back of the head with a crowbar, smashing his skull. He then stabbed his father multiple times.

Luckily his father didn't die from the mortal wounds. He managed to call 9-1-1 and tell them what happened. When the ambulance arrived Carol had already died. Wayne survived a short time but died in the hospital.

Yesterday Vincent plead guilty to two counts of second degree murder. A psychological evaluation found him to be both 100% sane and intelligent. He was charged as an adult and will be sentenced in September.

Why Governor Amosun Weeps Inside Ogun Prison

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun on Thursday wept at the pitiable sight of inmates at Oba prison in Abeokuta, Ogun State, western Nigeria.

Vanguard reports that the governor, who had earlier granted amnesty to 15 inmates at Ibara prison also in Abeokuta, could not hold back his emotions at Oba prison after witnessing what he called the "inhuman condition" to which the inmates were subjected.

It was gathered that Amosun was informed that majority of the 492 prisoners on awaiting trial list at the prison had spent between four and seven years in jail.
He ordered immediate medical attention for the inmates with critical medical conditions and directed that others should be taken to the hospital.

While making a speech at the prison, Amosun stated that the prison services was under the control of the Federal Government, adding that it would be irresponsible of any leader to neglect the conditions of prison inmates.

He expressed dismay at the deplorable state of prisons saying it would not enhance rehabilitation of inmates.

The state governor on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, said it is a big shame for him to realise that prisoners are undergoing such 'traumatised and dehumanised' condition in a state that he governs and promised to pay regular visits to prisons.

Why I Revealed The Nigerian Military Have Located The Chibok School Girls - Chief of Defence Staff

The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh has defended his claim on May 26 that the Nigerian Military have discovered the location of the over 200 missing girls held hostage by Boko Haram insurgents.
This claim did not go down well with the Presidency as it was yesterday reported that the President was angry with the Chief of Defence Staff's claim who viewed it s a breach capable of hindering the recovery of the children from their abductors.

Well the Presidency has reportedly softened its stance over the Chief of Defence Staff revelations based on his explanations.

Competent sources told Vanguard last night that the CDS whose competence has been questioned in recent times said his announcement was necessary before other countries to give the assurance that it was capable of tackling the rising wave of insurgency.

The source said: "If the Americans had made the breakthrough, it would have been the end of the Nigerian Military and the President, as Commander-in-Chief, knows that he must show and have confidence in the capacity and competence of his troops."

According to findings, it was due to the explanations made by Badeh that the Presidency authorised one of his senior media aides, Doyin Okupe, to make further claims that the military had sighted the missing girls.

Okupe, in the CNN interview monitored in Abuja, said the girls had been located but did not say where they were.

Meanwhile, the US who have provided air surveillance and logistics support to rescue the Chibok school girls is angry with the revelation made by the CDS as the US could not confirm the claim while saying they would prefer to bring out the girls before making any statement.

The source further said that the President was not unmindful of the effect of the positive development on the morale of the Nigerian military.

Ex-Oyo gov, Ladoja, loses son in auto crash

A former Governor of Oyo State, Rasheed Ladoja, on Thursday lost one of his sons in an auto crash on the Eko Bridge in Lagos.

The deceased, identified as Adebola Ladoja, was driving a Golf saloon car, marked, AKD 107 CJ, and was said to be on his way to Lagos Island when a Daf truck, with number plate, JJJ 59 XA, driven by one Justice Oseghai, rammed into his car on the Eko Bridge.

An eyewitness said the driver of the Daf truck, who was on top speed, lost control of his vehicle, rammed into the median of the bridge, before he eventually crashed into the deceased's car.

He said, "It took several hours before the victim could be rescued from the wreckage of the vehicle. He was trapped behind the wheels with blood gushing out of his head."

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident, added that it occurred at about 3.30pm.

She said, "At about 3.30pm on the Eko Bridge, Lagos Island, a Daf truck with number plate, JJJ 59 XA, driven by one Justice Oseghai, ran into a Volkswagen Golf saloon car, marked, AKD 107 CJ, driven by one Adebola Ladoja, the son of a former governor of Oyo State, Senator Rasheed Ladoja.

"The victim died on the spot. The corpse has been removed to the Lagos Island General Hospital mortuary for autopsy while the truck driver has been arrested."

Some friends of Adebola took to Facebook to mourn the deceased

One of them, Kiri Phoenix Gray, wrote, "Omg I'm in such shock to find out my friend Dee CaKe Ladoja is no longer with us. I'll never forget what such an amazing friend you were to me Dee and the only person I had when I first moved to London. I'll miss you so much and I regret all the times we said we needed to catch up recently and didn't. It was only a couple of weeks ago since we spoke and I won't forget that conversation.

Another friend, Folarin Amosu, wrote, "Adebola Ladoja, my aburo, my good friend and ex colleague, Just heard the sad news about your accident that led to death. Why bro??? Still saw you two weeks ago when you visited me, we had a lovely time laughing and sharing business ideas.

''You are the true legend Debola. Personally you will always be in my heart and I will always miss you."

Man flogs 16-year-old son to death in Lagos

The Lagos State Police command has arrested a father, identified simply as Benson, for allegedly flogging his son to death with a belt.

It was gathered that Benson, an indigene of Ishan in Edo State, allegedly beat up Bright, his 16-year-old son, to death after the teenager was accused of stealing N1,200.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Benson, who had divorced his wife, was living on Olanrewaju Street, Oregun, Ikeja, with his two sons – Bright and Samuel, 14 years – when the incident happened.

Samuel told our correspondent that on Sunday evening, his father beat up his elder brother in anger because of the accusation against him. He added that Bright had been ill before the beating.

He said, "Bright has been sick for some days before that Sunday. Initially in the morning, Dad was looking for Bright, but could not find him. Later in the evening, Bright showed up with some boys on our street who told our father that Bright had stolen N1,200 from them.

"Truly, dad found the money in his pocket, but I think he stole it because he was hungry that day.

"My father was very angry on discovering the money in Bright's pocket. He returned the money to the owners, and after they left, tied Bright's hands with a rope. He then began to beat him with the iron end of his belt."

Samuel noted that his father, who suffered from partial blindness, must have unintentionally hit Bright, who was still battling with a sickness, in the wrong place.

"I think it was the anger that made my daddy to make that mistake. The reason is because as soon as he did not hear Bright's cries again, dad stopped beating him, carried him on his shoulders and rushed him to a private hospital near our house. But he was said to be dead when we got to the hospital," he added.

However, Benson's neighbours told our correspondent that the man, despite his eyes' problem, had the habit of beating his children with any object.

One of the neighbours, who identified herself simply as Oluwaseun, explained that the man began beating the boy around 9pm, adding that Bright's pleas for mercy fell on the dad's deaf ears.

She said, "The man is simply a wicked man. He does not relate with people. The boy he killed usually takes him to church every Sunday because of his eyes' problem. So, on that Sunday, he could have become angry that the boy left home and refused to take him to church."

Another resident on the street, who craved anonymity, said Benson had a history of violence in the area.

"I was living in the house before. On one occasion when we were still living together, we had a small disagreement over where to spread clothes in the backyard of the house. The next thing was that Benson got a cutlass and chased me. I narrowly escaped from him that day. That was one of the reasons I moved out of that place," he said.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Bright's remains had been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Ikeja mortuary for autopsy.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed that the case was under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.

Professors, perm secs to earn full salaries as pension

Pension stipends received by professors and permanent secretaries will be augmented by the Federal Government when the new Pension Reform Act is eventually passed into law, investigation has revealed.

This development will enable them to continue to earn their full salaries in retirement even when they don't have enough funds in their Retirement Savings Accounts, unlike other retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The National Pension Commission had told the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service and the House of Representatives Committee on Pension that some categories of workers were unable to get sufficient pension stipends as provided by the law.

These include top public servants like permanent secretaries, police officers, professors and others whose conditions of service prior to the enactment of the Pension Reform Act, 2004 allowed them to enjoy 100 per cent of their final pay as pension for life.

PenCom recommended to the Senate that the Federal Government should establish a severance package for them in addition to their retirement benefits under the CPS.

The memorandum submitted by PenCom to the Senate Committee on Pensions on the bill to repeal the PRA 2004 and enact the Pension Reform Act, 2013 made provisions for adjustments.

The Acting-Director General, PenCom, Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, noted that Section 5(1) of the PRA 2013 included under the list of persons exempted from the scheme, professors covered by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act, 2012 and categories of employees entitled by virtue of their terms and conditions of service to retire with full retirement benefits.

According to her, this is not the intention of the amendment.

"These two categories of persons are not meant to be exempted from the Contributory Pension Scheme. Rather, they will continue to be under the CPS but will, upon retirement, get their full retirement benefits," she said.

PenCom recommended that this should be rectified to reflect the true intention of the amendment.

The amended bill has passed through the necessary readings and is being harmonised prior to being passed into law by legislature and assented to by the President.

However, not all professors may enjoy this privilege because its implementation may be limited to those who became professors at least 20 years before retirement.

While the PRA requires that they should continue to contribute part of their monthly emolument into their RSAs, their pension benefits will not be dependent on the level of their contributions because the Federal Government will cover whatever shortage may occur.

The payment of retirement benefits under Section 4(1) (c) of the PRA 2004 allows for a lump sum payment to a retiree, provided that the amount left after the lump sum withdrawal will be sufficient to fund a programmed withdrawal over an expected life span or annuity for life, of not less than 50 per cent of his annual remuneration as of the date of retirement.

This therefore makes the monthly pension withdrawals to be a first charge on the RSA balance, while the residual, after providing for the monthly withdrawals, will be paid as lump sum.

Jim and Nadia have not broken up — Jim Iyke’s manager

Over the weekend, news went viral that Nollywood actor Jim Iyke and his Ghollywood sweetheart Nadia Buari have split.

Nadia Buari
Latest report has it that the lovebirds are still together, as this was confirmed through Jim Iyke's manager Mitch Ngaman .
Nevertheless, he said the couple had just a little misunderstanding.
"I can assure you that whatever you may have heard regarding the 'misunderstanding' between Jim and Nadia is pure assumption. However, it is normal for lovers to disagree with each other occasionally or they wouldn't be human beings."
Ngaman described the rumour as false and the handiwork of the lovers' detractors.
"We are aware of the false rumour about Jim and Nadia's breakup and decided to ignore it because it is baseless. Jim and Nadia have not broken up, as claimed by Emma.
That guy is a frustrated musician. All he does is to meddle in other people's business. And if he does not have his way, he goes into a tantrum and fabricates stories .We will act when we deem fit. He can keep on ranting for now," he said.

Yvonne Nelson replies critics on bleaching rumour

Ghanaian actress, model, film producer and entrepreneur, Yvonne Nelson is frustrated at recent speculations making rounds that she is bleaching her skin.
The screen diva said, she's tired of all the false reports about her. According to her, 'I don't understand the whole bleaching thing; I am just tired of explaining. I haven't bleached, I have a picture with my mum on Instagram and we are the same colour, I am just tired of talking about it; people love to talk about me, I just don't get it,' she said .
Nelson who has over 500 thousand followers on social media platforms twitter, Instagram and facebook said, she would block anyone who make negative comments about her on her page.

Lawyers kick against plan to tax churches, mosques

Some prominent lawyers in Lagos, yesterday kicked against plan to tax religious organisations in the country, as being recommended by the ongoing national conference.

Delegates at the conference had on Wednesday voted in support of taxing both churches and mosques.
The lawyers told reporters that the move by the conference was a clear misplacement of priorities.
A human rights lawyer, Mr Bamidele Aturu, said the delegates should focus on important issues that would foster the unity and development of Nigeria.
Aturu said it was the duty of the National Assembly to promulgate such laws, adding that the non-payment of taxes by religious organisations was not an issue in Nigeria.
"For me, it is a misplacement of their priorities and they are only going to create more controversies which may make their report unacceptable at the end of the day," he said.
Another lawyer, Mr Wale Ogunade, said the conference should address issues such as unemployment, poverty, corruption and national unity.
Ogunade said: "This is just a diversion because there are more pressing issues. The government has not exhausted the money being generated from oil and other mineral resources.
"The delegates should be concerned with how to make the government accountable to Nigerians on how our resources are being spent. By doing this, many Nigerians, including churches and mosques, will voluntarily start paying their taxes".
On his part, Mr Uche Edeh, a Lagos-based lawyer, said taxing religious organisations could lead to crisis because it would be difficult to enforce.
Mr Adebamigbe Omole, a former Chairman of Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, however, supported the recommendation of the conference, saying. "I am in total support because some of the religious centres have been commercialised."

President Museveni’s hypocritical attack on Nigeria

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni attended the grand finale rally for the National Resistance Movement woman flagbearer, Mrs. Rebecca Nalwanga at Kalanga in Uganda last week.
In condemning the Opposition in Uganda the President said that "some people have turned politics to a game of lies and un-seriousness". In his characteristic manner, President Museveni took advantage of the local campaign to launch an unwarranted attack on Nigeria.

Yoweri Museveni of Uganda
In criticizing the maladroit handling of the War on terror by the Goodlock Jonathan Administration President Museveni boasted thus,"I have never invited the United Nations to guard our security. Me, Yoweni Museveni to say that I have failed to protect my people and I call in the UN…I would rather hang myself. We prioritized national security by developing a strong army, otherwise our Uganda would be like DRC, South Sudan, Somalia or Nigeria where militias have disappeared with school children. It will be a vote of no confidence in our country and our citizens if we can't guarantee our security. What kind of persons would we be?"
It is interesting to note that the people of the Nubian community in Uganda saw through the "lies and unseriosness" of the ruling party in Uganda. Hence, they rejected the candidate of his party at the polls by voting for the 28 year old Ms Brenda Nabukenya of the Democratic Party. I have just been informed by a Ugandan human rights colleague that President Museveni is pained by the fact that the electorate in Luweto Constituency voted for a rooky politician who was born the very year he seized power and assumed the presidency of the Republic of Uganda.
Like other world leaders, President Museveni is perfectly entitled to berate the Goodluck Jonathan Administration for its failure to contain the Boko Haram sect. But it is the height of hypocrisy on the part of the Ugandan leader to attempt to ridicule Nigeria in the ongoing war on terror. The Ugandan leader should not be allowed to get away with "official hypocracy"as he lacks the moral competence to teach any lesson on how to end the atrocities committed by terrorists in any part of Africa. More so that Uganda with a "prioritized national security" has not been able to defeat the rag tag Lord's Resistance Army led by Joseph Kony for over two decades.
Even though President Museveni would not invite the United Nations to provide security for his country he has never hesitated to call on the United States and other Western countries to provide troops, arms and ammunition as well as funds in containing the menace of the LRA. Just on March 24 this year, the United States government was reported to have deployed "military aircraft as well as an increased number of of troops to Uganda to assist in the hunt for Joseph Kony, the fugitive Ugandan leader of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA)."
Of course, that was not the first time that foreign troops had been dispatched to Uganda following the inability of President Museveni and his "strong army" to guarantee life and property in Uganda. Or is President Museveni not aware that Joseph Kony has gone underground because he and his army commanders have been declared wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), an organ of the United Nations? Yet President Museveni would never call in the United Nations to take part in the maintenance of internal security in Uganda! The garrulous Ugandan leader also boasted that he would not allow his country to descend to the level of insecurity that obtains in Nigeria where school children have disappeared. Has President Museveni quickly forgotten  that the LRA invaded St. Mary Secondary Grammar School on October 1996 where they abducted 150 girls. It is on record that it was not the strong army of Uganda but the vice-principal of the school,
Reverend Sister Faresa who rescued 109 of the abducted girls. Several years later, President Museveni wrote a letter to Mr. Kofi Anan, the then Secretary-General of the United Nations to intervene in respect of the abductees who were still in the captivity of the terrorists.
Involvement of Ugandan army
With respect, President Museveni's uncomplimentary remarks on DRC and South Sudan are equally uncalled for having regard to the involvement of the Ugandan army in the destabilisation of the Lake region. In Communication No 227/99 (2003) filed at the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights by the Democratic Republic of Congo it was established that the national armies of Uganda along with Burundi and Rwanda were indicted for the massive infringements of human rights in the DRC. Specifically, the Commission found that "the killings, massacres, rapes, mutilations and other grave human rights abuses were committed" while the Respondents States' were still in effective occupation of the eastern provinces of the complainant state contrary to their obligations under Part III of the Geneva Convention.
With respect to the reckless looting of the resources of the complainant State the Commission confirmed the allegation that "Rwanda and Uganda took over control of fiscal and customs revenue collected respectively by the Directorate General of Taxes." Since President Museveni could no longer rely on the illegal exploitation of the vast resources of the DRC his government has had to depend on foreign aid to fund the annual budget of Uganda. According to the Overseas Development Institute, Uganda received  $1.6 billion in 2011, making it the 20th world's largest aid recipient. Comrade Tajudeen Abdulraman, the respected pan African of Nigerian extraction who worked closely with President Museveni in Kampala until he breathed his last in 2009 must have turned in his grave over the unprecedented reliance of Uganda on foreign aid to fund its annual budget.
It is indisputable that the record of atrocities of LRA is by far worse than that of the Boko Haram sect. It is common knowledge that the abduction of children and women is the hallmark of the LRA. From the account of the Human Rights Watch between 1987 and 2006 "at least 20, 000 Ugandan children were abducted. More than 1.9 million people were displaced from their homes into camps and tens of thousands of Ugandan civilians died. Nearly the entire population of Acholiland was displaced due to a combination of LRA actions and the Ugandan government's forcible resettlement of people in camps. Living conditions in the camps were horrific, and for years communities were largely cut off from basic necessities. The death toll from cholera and other diseases was often higher than from the conflict itself."
Last week, the Chairman of the Editorial Board of Thisday newspaper, Mr. Segun Adeniyi noted that "it is over six years since LRA wreaked any havok in Northern Uganda…". While that is an irrefutable statement it ought to be pointed out that the LRA has only been pushed into DRC and South Sudan where it has linked up with other criminal gangs to continue its atrocious attacks on the people of both countries. In the renewed fight on terror in Nigeria the armed forces should wipe out terrorism and not behave like Uganda by driving them to neighboring countries. That will not guarantee regional peace which is badly needed for the development of a continent that has been raped by imperialism and its local lackeys who parade themselves as African leaders.

CONTROVERSY TRAILS MILITARY SPENDING

The funding of the military, especially the ongoing counter-insurgency operation, is generating heated controversy especially over who handles the money allocated to the military as both the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) have denied handling the money.

While the MOD has washed its hands off the expenditure of the military, the ONSA, too, has done the same but the some officials of the former have faulted the ONSA's claim.

A critical section of the populace has been asking questions about the funding of the ongoing counter-insurgency operation which involves the military and all the security agencies such as the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Department of the State Security Services (DSS).

The controversy came to the open when our sister publication, LEADERSHIP Weekend, in a story published in its last edition quoted a ministry source alleging that the Ministry of Defence was not involved in the funding of the operation. The story further disclosed that the Presidency dealt directly with service chiefs.

Checks reveal that Nigeria is not among the leading countries in Defence budgeting. Egypt spends $4billion (35 million manpower), Ethiopia $300 (34 million manpower), South Africa $5million (14 million manpower), Nigeria $2.2billion (73 million manpower), Algeria $8billion (20 million manpower), Kenya $5billion (20 million manpower) and Libya $880 million (3 million manpower).

Another MOD official, who corroborated the story, explained that the funding of the counter insurgency operation is being handled by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). According to him, the MOD's involvement in the funding of the military is on paper, not real.

"It is on paper that the military receives its fund through the MOD; that may have to do with the overheads but when you are talking of the real funding of the ongoing counter-insurgency operation, the vote is allocated to the Office of the National Security Adviser. This is why the ministry is not aware of the purchase of any ammunition or any other thing that is needed for the operation. Some soldiers, SSS and policemen and officers have just left the country and going for the counter-insurgency training in a country near Germany. The MOD is not aware of it. Whatever they need is channelled to the NSA and all we are told is that some officers are travelling to someplace.

"You go and see what the NSA's vote or allocation is and what it contains in the budget. You will see that the Police, the Immigration, Civil Defence Corps, NIA, DIA, DSS is on the list; this should not be so. The NSA should be shielded and protected in all of these. In the area of purchasing, who is in charge of the due process, verification, qualities, standardisation, etc? By implication, ministries of Interior, Defence, and the Police Affairs are not directly involved in their capital expenditure, and the question is, who accounts for their purchases? What we are saying is that, each of these ministries – not only the MOD, should be deeply involved in all their transactions for accountability."

Reacting to a story published by TELL magazine, the ONSA, in a statement issued and signed by the Special Adviser to the NSA on Media and Publicity, Mr Karounwi Adekunle, denied ever being involved in the funding of the military as reported.

He said: "Our attention has been drawn to the false and misleading story published in TELL magazine of June 2, 2014, alleging that "for some years now, defence funds have been under the management of the National Security Adviser instead of the Ministry of Defence where the funds were traditionally administered".

"We state, clearly and unambiguously, that ONSA is separate from MOD in all budgetary affairs. The ONSA defends its budgets before the National Assembly and MOD does for its own. All budgetary provisions are clearly spelt out and within the public domain. ONSA has no responsibility for military personnel's salaries and allowances, capital projects or otherwise. All are within the domain of MOD. So, how can the ONSA be accused of managing defence funds?"We request that, for any allegation from any source about ONSA, please recourse be made to the NSA for his own side of the story before publishing. There is need for a holistic and balanced report at all times."

While some people argue that the military is being poorly funded, some disagree but argue that the money passed by the National Assembly is being diverted or withheld by the Presidency. Some even argue that military purchases some refurbished ammunition as a result of poor funding or mismanagement of the money allocated to it.

A military source claimed that most of the contractors given jobs are recommended by the National Assembly members and the officials of the Presidency.

"If they are saying we are poorly funded, they should ask the National Assembly and the Presidency those questions. How much do they allocate to us yearly, and since the National Assembly performs oversight functios over our spending, the members also have roles to play here. But if you want to hear the truth, most of our contractors are recommended by the National Assembly and the Presidency. But whatever we have will be well managed to perform our constitutional responsibilities," he source.

The leadership of the opposition has been consistently calling on the National Assembly, which performs oversight function on the military and other security agencies, to look into their books because they believe the military is failing in the prosecution of the war against terror because of poor funding or mismanagement of the fund or both.

DHQ Insists We Have Girls in Sight, UK May Deploy Troops

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ)  Wednesday stood by the claim made by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, that it had located the 200 plus girls who were abducted from their secondary school in Chibok over a month ago.

Badeh on Monday had said the military had located the missing teenagers, but would not want to resort to force to rescue them in order to avoid collateral damage.

The DHQ was reacting to the sceptism expressed by the US State Department the next day over Badeh's claim, stating that it had no "independent information" on the matter.
The State Department also issued a statement yesterday to correct erroneous assertions that the longtime human rights tool commonly known as the "Leahy Law" in some way could hinder US partnership efforts with the Nigerian government to rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls from Boko Haram.
This is just as the British tabloid, Daily Mail, reported that Britain will be joining the United States to send soldiers to Nigeria, but the troops would not be involved directly in the hunt for the girls or take an active role in any military action against the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

They will be deployed to provide specialist training for Nigerian forces as part of a package of assistance provided by the British government to tackle the threat posed by the increasingly bold Islamic sect.
Speaking on the military's stance that it was aware of the location of the girls, the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major-Gen Chris Olukolade, while speaking at the National Briefing Centre on Terrorism, in Abuja, said: "Let everyone believe what the Chief of Defence Staff said and if you don't believe, wait for developments. But our interest is in the safety of these children and every effort will be put towards that and we expect cooperation from everyone.
"We remain with the position taken by the CDS. When we have any further comments or developments, the nation will be told."
Also speaking on Monday's attack on a military installation in Buni-Yadi in Yobe State by Boko Haram, Olukolade said 12 soldiers and 13 policemen were killed during the fighting.
He also denied the speculation that the troops in Buni-Yadi were left high and dry by the military command during the incident.

"The logistics will have to be understood and it will not be proper just to conclude that there was no help or response. However, we will continue to respond based on logistics that is available and information that is made available as quickly as possible," he said.

Olukolade also expressed ignorance over media reports that members of Boko Haram had on Monday hoisted their flag in Ashigashiya community in Gwazo Local Government Area of Borno State.
He said the military was not aware of the incident, adding that the military would not allow such a campaign to succeed.

"I am reading it from you people as well, but all I can tell you at the moment is that the Nigerian military and security agencies will not allow any group to hoist strange flags in any portion of this country. It is our duty to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria, we will not allow any strange flag to fly anywhere and you can be sure that such campaigns will not succeed," he said.

Olukolade disclosed that based on intelligence reports and information provided by Nigerians, a number of arrests had been made in different parts of Kaduna and Zamfara States and thus reducing terror activities tremendously in those states.

"Troops have continued to raid different locations. A number of arrests have been made in Kachia and Zamfara," he said, adding that in the course of the raids, some suspects died during the exchange of gunfire with troops while arms and ammunition were recovered in the process.

He also gave an update on the recent bomb explosions in Jos, Plateau State, saying one suspect had been arrested and was cooperating with security forces which would lead to further arrests.
In another event yesterday, the CDS declared that the ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency war had grown beyond Boko Haram, to a broader war against the Al Qaeda terror network in North and West Africa.
Badeh stated this when the Social Welfare Network Initiative (SWNI), a coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) and community-based non-governmental organisation paid him a visit in DHQ.
The CDS said the military and federal government are caught up in a serious war that is now far bigger than Boko Haram, adding that Al Qaeda was now fully in charge of terrorist activities in the country.

He however pledged that despite the "formidable nature of the global terror network", Nigeria would defeat them, while reiterating the military's resolve to rescue the missing schoolgirls.

US Sceptical about Military's Claim

But despite the insistence by the military that it has the girls in its sight, the US expressed scepticism over the claim by Badeh.
US State Department Spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, was quoted by the AFP as stating that there was no "independent information from the US to support these reports."

Asked whether she found it "smart" of Nigerian officials to announce they had found the girls -- in the event that they had been located -- Psaki responded that "for the girls' safety and wellbeing, we certainly would not discuss publicly this sort of information".
The tone of Psaki's statement was seen as a subtle protest at the way Nigerian officials handle sensitive information.
US authorities had previously expressed doubt that the Nigerian military has the capacity to conduct the rescue mission.

Human Rights Threshold Set Around Leahy Law

The State Department also provided clarification yesterday on erroneous assertions that the longtime human rights tool commonly known as the "Leahy Law" in some way could hinder U.S. partnership efforts with the Nigerian Government to rescue the kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls from Boko Haram.

In a press release from the State Department, it said the Leahy Laws have not prevented the US from supporting Nigeria's efforts to respond to Boko Haram's kidnapping of schoolgirls, adding that the US is providing Nigeria with intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) specifically related to the kidnapping crisis, and the inter-agency US team now in Nigeria is working with Nigerian counterparts on medical, intelligence, counter-terrorism, and communications concerns.

The Leahy Law or Leahy amendment is a US human right law that prohibits the US Department of State and Department of Defence from providing foreign assistance to foreign military units that violate human rights with impunity. It is named after its principal sponsor, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont.
The State Department further pointed out that its Abuja embassy's Military Information Support Team (MIST) "is developing examples of the types of influencing programmes that could be employed in northern Nigeria with increased cooperation from Nigerian counterparts, and the MIST and the State Department Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications (CSCC) are exploring ways of using the Rewards for Justice programme to help counter Boko Haram's efforts."

It noted that the main impediment to the US' efforts to support Nigeria's broader response to Boko Haram was not the Leahy Laws, but gross violations of human rights perpetrated by Nigerian forces, the Nigerian government's resistance to adopting a more comprehensive approach to Boko Haram, and the continued lack of political will within the Nigerian government to investigate allegations of human rights abuses and hold perpetrators accountable.
"The US has not granted Nigeria's long-standing request for broad-based ISR not because of Leahy but due to concerns about Nigeria's human rights track record and ability to use this information appropriately.
"Even with these challenges, however, the US continues to provide substantial amounts of security assistance to the Nigerian government. The US supported the creation of an intelligence fusion cell without triggering Leahy ineligibilities," the statement pointed out.

The Leahy Laws, the Department of State said, are central to the US' efforts to convince Nigeria to alter its counter-productive approach to Boko Haram.

It said: "President Obama, Secretary Kerry, and many other senior State and DoD (Department of Defence) officials have urged Nigeria to improve its human rights record, investigate abuse allegations, and eliminate abusive practices.
"We have seen some progress in this regard, with Nigerian leaders pledging to embed human rights advisors within combat units in the north (although no advisors have actually been embedded), announcing a new approach to Boko Haram, and allowing greater NGO access to prison facilities where abuses are occurring.
"The Leahy Laws also directs the US to assist foreign governments, to the maximum extent practicable, in taking effective steps to bring responsible members of the security forces to justice.
"The US has an inter-agency approved Leahy 'corrective action' plan for Nigeria, which specifies the steps Nigeria must take to address Leahy concerns, and the ways in which the US is prepared to help Nigeria achieve this outcome. The plan notes the need for Nigeria to (1) investigate abuse allegations and prosecutor perpetrators; and (2) provide greater sub-unit information so that the US can better differentiate tarnished units from clean ones.

"The plan also identifies several ways in which the US can help Nigeria reach the effective steps threshold. This includes providing training for Nigerian human rights advisors embedded within Nigerian forces, working with Nigeria to draft a more comprehensive counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency plan, providing training on detainee management, and increasing the Nigerian Human Rights Commission's ability to coordinate with the Nigerian military, investigate abuse allegations, and train Nigerian forces."

UK to Deploy Troops to Nigeria

The British government, nonetheless, may give the green light for hundreds of British troops to be sent to Nigeria to help local forces in their war with the Al Qaeda-linked terrorists holding the girls.

According to the Daily Mail, "With Nigeria's military said to be demoralised and outgunned in the face of Boko Haram, plans have been drawn-up for UK soldiers to provide specialist training to Nigerian forces as part of a package of assistance provided by the British government to tackle the threat posed by the increasingly bold militia."
However, the tabloid said that both British ministers and military chiefs in London have yet to sanction the plans being put forward by senior officers attached to the specialist UK team sent to Abuja following the kidnap of the schoolgirls.

"Officials stress the troops would not be involved directly in the hunt for the girls or take an active role in any military action against Boko Haram which has carried out a series of devastating bombings across Nigeria.
"The UK government is said to be anxious to give the Nigerian administration of President Jonathan help in providing security against the terrorists without committing any UK troops to 'high risk' deployments such as the hunt for the girls or placing them in a position where they could be drawn in to fighting the well-armed Boko Haram gunmen," it stated.

The role of a British force would be to help restore morale and train elements of the Nigerian army on how to track and fight Boko Haram.

Until recently, Britain had a training facility in Ghana where UK military instructors trained West African countries in readiness for their deployments with the African Union (AU) on a project called Exercise African Winds.
A Royal Marine Training team from 45 Commando was deployed earlier this year in Nigeria and Cameroun.

Four More Girls Escape

In the meantime, the number of girls believed to have been abducted by Boko Haram insurgents but are now reunited with their families has grown to 57, as the Borno State Commissioner for Education, Hon. Inuwa Kubo, was said to have disclosed that four more girls had recently escaped from their captors.
Kubo passed this information to the Presidential Fact-finding Committee on the Chibok Attack when it rounded off its sitting in Maiduguri last weekend, sources from the Borno State Government revealed yesterday.
Borno government sources said the education commission had at the weekend passed on the information about the four girls who had escaped when he appeared before the fact-finding committee set up by the presidency on the Chibok attack.

Kubo, he said, told the committee that the four girls were discovered after the Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima had directed the Ministry of Education to open data pages for families of all the girls which should include names and pictures of the girls, class, age, etc, as well the pictures of parents.
"It was during the data capturing exercise and visits to parents that it was discovered that four girls who were among those declared missing had reunited with their parents but the parents failed to inform the school authority," the official disclosed.

He said the commissioner was said to have been furious with the parents for keeping the government in the dark.
The four girls, the Borno official added, are believed to be amongst those that escaped to the bush and lost direction during the attack and abduction from Chibok by the Islamist sect.

He explained further: "The commissioner told the committee that with the discovery of the four girls, a total of 219 girls were still missing. He informed the committee that after the April 14 attack on the school, the state government had made series of announcements calling on parents whose daughters might have run home following the attack to bring them back so the government could take records to ascertain the number of missing girls.

Another 40 Killed in Fresh Attack

Notwithstanding the revelation that four more girls had escaped from Boko Haram, the sect continued its onslaught in the North-east yesterday, with its attack on a remote border town in Borno State where it killed another 40 persons.

Sources told reporters in Maiduguri that the sect attacked Gurmushi village in Marte Local Government Area, north of Borno on the Nigeria-Cameroun border after the early morning Muslim prayer (Subhi).
The gunmen, according to sources, sneaked into the village unnoticed and opened fire on the villagers, some of whom had woken early to go for the Muslim prayer.

A source claimed that about 40 persons were killed in the siege.
The claim, however, could not be verified from the military or police authorities in the state at the time of filing this report.

A military source, who was contacted, told journalists that the incident was yet to be reported to the security authorities in the state capital, Maiduguri, noting that the inaccessibility of the area via mobile phones might have been responsible.
But the BBC Hausa Service monitored in Maiduguri yesterday quoted a woman as saying 40 people were killed.
"I counted over 40 corpses littered on the ground, while the village was razed completely, most of us ran into the bush for our safety," the woman told BBC on the phone.
She also claimed that 12 persons were injured in the siege, adding that she and some other residents of the village had to flee to a Cameroun settlement for fear of another attack by the insurgents.

Boko Haram Shuts Down Schools in Jigawa

Also, men suspected to be members of the terrorist group have shut down over 30 primary and secondary schools in Bolmo area of Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

A source, who spoke with reporters on yesterday, revealed that the residents of the area had informed the security agencies of the latest development, adding that the suspected terrorists were in full control of the area.  He also said they are recruiting youths at Gwani village of Gwaram, giving them the sum of N50,000 and brand new motorcycles.
"They have captured villages around the area and even warned the villagers to stop going to western education schools, viewing centres and any other social event," the source said.
"They took over the area since February this year; residents complied because they threatened to burn their houses if they did not obey their order," he added.

Boko Haram Gunmen Kill 35 in Borno Villages

Zacheaus Somorin in Berlin with agency report
Boko Haram gunmen have killed 35 people in attacks on three villages in Borno state near the border with Cameroon, a military source and residents told AFP on Thursday.

Dozens of Boko Haram gunmen, dressed in military uniform, stormed Gumushi, Amuda and Arbokko in all-terrain vans and motorcycles, opening fire on residents and torching homes with petrol bombs, they said.

How we packed human flesh, blood –Abuja street sweepers

When she applied for the job of a street sweeper with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, seven years ago, she had little knowledge of what the job entailed. She never  imagined that one day, she would be asked to pack mangled human bodies with her bare hands.

That is the reality that dawned on Mrs. Rebecca Sunday few weeks ago. The sweeper leaves her home as early as 5 am to her location in the city centre where she works until evening before retiring home to join members of her  family.

Sadly, she had seen some of her colleagues knocked down by vehicles while on duty. In spite of wearing reflective jackets to  alert motorists about their presence on the road. motorists still  hit  them. They contend with that and several other challenges .

But the real challenge came on April 14 when the Nyanya bus terminal was blown off by insurgents and scores of people  killed. It was not just that people were killed, their bodies were ripped apart by the bomb.

Tears flowed unhindered down the cheeks of Mrs Sunday as she recalled the painful moment.

She said she never imagined that she would one day come  face-to-face with such a heart-wrenching situation nor be asked to shift aside mangled bodies still gushing out blood nor pack human debris.  She looked pale as she narrated her ordeal.

Saddened by the incidence and the number of people lost to the blast, Mrs. Sunday, alongside her other colleagues were drafted to clean the venue of the incident. At first, she did not believe what she was about to do until she was handed a bin bag to start work.

The first thing she did was to cry and ask God why the people who carried out the attack, did it in the first place and prayed God not to allow such to happen again.

After the short prayer, she began to sweep and what she saw was horrific.

Hear her, "I picked human flesh like goat meat sold in the market. goat meat is even better because the butcher will sell the quantity you want based on the buyer's order and  pocket.

"My colleagues and I picked human hands, foot, neck, intestine, just name it. I picked them and dropped them in the bin bag given to me. After I had gathered the human parts to a certain quantity I would take the bag to the central point. "I saw blood, fresh human blood and packed sand to cover it.

"I saw something with these eyes. If any prophet had prophesied to me that I would one day pack human flesh with my hands, I would have told him he is a prophet of doom since I'm not a medical personnel, either do I work in the hospital".

But when it happened, I had no choice but to do my job.

"I am not a nurse or cleaner in a hospital, but all the same I had to do it. It was not easy at all, but I had to do it and by the time I finished, I couldn't do anything with myself."

The sweeper who repeatedly fought back tears with her hands continued: "So, many things ran through my mind. I cannot start explaining to you now how bad I felt.I have been hearing about how Boko Haram attack and kill innocent  people , I never knew that one day I will come face-to-face with that.

"It  was when the first  Nyanya, bomb blast happened that I  had better appreciation of what people in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states have been  going through.

"All I will have to say now is to pray that God will, in his infinite mercies, protect Nigeria from Boko Haram members. From what I saw, it is only God that can get out of this terrorists trouble"

Another sweeper, Mrs Helen Elias, who said she has been on the job for two years told Abuja Metro, that even though she did not witness the first blast at Nyanya, what she saw at the second blast on May 1, was a nightmare.

Mrs, Elias, a mother of four, said apart from coming face to face with human parts for the first time, she was also confronted with the stench from fresh blood oozing from the scene of the incident. Though she covered her nose, the stench was still there.

She narrated "After the thing happened in the night, they called us in the morning to assemble at Nyanya, to work there. We got there early but had to wait to enable the soldiers and other security agents rid the place of any bomb. It was after the security personnel certified the place okay that our supervisor asked us to start sweeping.

"While sweeping, I packed some piece of flesh as if I was packing cow meat. It was really a bad sight, I have never seen a thing like that before"

"At first I was afraid to touch or pick  up those  pieces of flesh. They were scattered all over the place. However, I summoned courage and started doing that when  I saw my colleagues  doing it. I even saw one of my colleagues picking up human palm that was chopped off from the wrist area.

"Kai, this thing is too much, government should try and do something to end this kind of thing. These  Boko -haram people are just out to kill poor people, if not why would they come to Nyanya, where only poor people live".

Despite their experience, both sweepers said they do not have plans to leave the job. Their prayer is that no bomb blast should be allowed to occur again either in Abuja or any part of the country.

"Every Nigerian must pray that this stops. It is bad killing people like goats, even goats are not killed in that manner", Mrs Sunday said.

Nigeria Vs. Scotland: UK fans impressed by pattern of play

Nigerians in the UK and other supporters of the Super Eagles have expressed satisfaction with the team's readiness for next month's World Cup in Brazil.

They expressed the views after the Super Eagles drew 2-2 with Scotland in an intentional friendly match in London.

The supporters, who turned out en mass, trekked for about a kilometre from the underground station to the Craven cottage ground of Fulham Stadium, singing and applauding the world cup bound team.

Some of those who spoke to the Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), were unanimous in their commendation for the team, which they described as "a reformed brand".

They, however, called on the Eagles' handlers to organize more training and strengthen their tactics, to enable the team to emerged victorious in its group.

Mr Chinedu Mba, a spectator, said: "I am impressed by the boys; they played well but need to do more."

Also Mr Ojo Aderemi said: "Scotland almost dominated the match but when international based players like Osaze Odemwingi and Victor Moses joined the game in the second half, they changed the rhythm dramatically."

Similarly, Dr Rose Anya said "the selection of players was in order; you can not field key players and risk them being injured; this is just a friendly match; Nigeria is World Cup bound but Scotland is not."

Others who also voiced their opinion, said that with the current pattern and their form, the Super Eagles would gradually return to its past glory.

The match was part of their build-up to the June tournament in Brazil

2015: Okorocha gives Imo people condition for re-election

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday, took Imo people by surprise when he stated that if the people want him to stand for re-election next year, they must be ready to fund the proj ect through free will do nations.

Addressing hundreds of Imo citizens and par ty loyalists, who had thronged the Internation al Convention Centre, venue of his address on the achievements of his administration in three years, Okorocha said: "If you want me to contest for governorship elec tion, one million of you must endorse me and contribute N100 each and those who want me to contest for president, two million must en dorse me and pay N100 each as your free will donation for my politi cal cause."

Before now, the governor had talked about consolidating his achievements by re-contesting or vying for presidency to salvage Ndigbo and the nation.

Okorocha, who listed some of his achieve ments in the past three years, spoke of his in tention to make Imo a one-city state through the provision of linkage roads to reduce traffic congestion in the ur ban centres, adding that more than 1,000 verifi able projects were going on in the state.

He warned teachers in the habit of exploiting their students with ille gal imposition and collection of levies to desist forthwith or be prepared to face the full weight of the law.

Okorocha promised to redesign the Onitsha Road industrial layout in Owerri, adding that he had approved money to secure the accreditation of more courses at the Imo State University in Owerri.

4 policemen, bank manager killed by robbers in Rivers

Suspected armed robbers, yester day, killed four policemen and a regional manager of a new generation bank in Igwu ruta, near Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 9:45am at the Igwuruta Roundabout in Obio/Akpor Local Gov ernment Area of of the state.

Some eyewitnesses claimed that the bandits, who were fully armed, did not give room for the de ceased policemen to retali ate.

The hoodlums were said to have laid ambush for the policemen and the bank manager and opened fire on the Hilux van as they approached and killed them.

According to another eye witness, the armed robbers made away with the loot.

The eyewitness said: "Four policemen were killed and one of the police men, who tried to escape, was also killed after he was hit by the armed robbers' bullets.

GOK Ajayi goes home amid eulogies, tributes

The late legal icon and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Godwin Olusegun Kolawole Ajayi, went home on Thursday amid torrents of eulogies and tributes.

At the well-attended funeral at the Cathedral Church of Our Saviour, Ijasi, Italowajoda, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State,  clerics, lawyers, colleagues, associates and other guests, paid glowing tributes to the departed lawyer.

In his sermon, the Bishop of Ife Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Rt. Reverend Oluranti Odubogun, said apart from distinguishing himself in the legal profession, the deceased lived a selfless life.

Describing the late Ajayi as a perfect gentleman who demonstrated exceptional brilliance in his chosen profession, he also acknowledged that he had time to serve God, and contributed to the development of the church.

He said, "GOK was okay in the Lord. He was an acclaimed gentleman, recognised in the legal profession. His brilliance was unparalleled. He was a stickler for honesty and truth."

Quoting from the Bible, using the book of Numbers 23:10, unlike the character of the story, Odubogun said GOK Ajayi shunned avarice and greed and followed the path of righteousness.

He explained that righteousness "paves the way for eternal joy while sin is ruinous to anyone indulging in it."

Expressing his confidence that the iconic lawyer had joined the saints, he charged the congregation to imbibe virtues that would grant them eternal peace when they leave this world.

He said,  "Our works in this world will determine where we will end up. Are you having good works? Are you Christ-like in anyway? Are you among those making life difficult for others?

"Are you a kidnapper or an armed or pen robber? Or are you a beneficiary of these? If you are involved in any of these, you cannot make heaven. There is no shortcut to heaven but for you to leave all the detestable things you are doing."

He prayed for the wife, Olayinka, children and grandchildren for God to comfort them.

The governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, described the late lawyer Ajayi as legal titan,"who used his profession to identify with the masses."

On his part, Tunji Ayanlaja, SAN, who said he served under the legal icon, noted that his legacies would endure for generation yet unborn, adding that his exit was quite painful.

He said, "He was a consummate lawyer, a good teacher, I mean the best teacher. I passed through him. Am I not a good material? That is GOK Ajayi. He is not dead, he is living with us."

Gen. Zamani Lekwot (retd.), who also recounted how the legal luminary saved him and others from the throes of death over the Zango-Kataf crisis, said "he was a great man, a great asset to the legal profession and a fine human being."

The funeral attracted dignitaries from all walks of life, which included the former chairman, Punch Nigeria Limited and a delegate to the National Conference, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola; a former Minister of Industry, also a delegate to the National Conference, Chief Nike Akande; Chairman, First City Monument Group, Chief Subomi Balogun, and wife; founder, Oodua Peoples Congress, Dr. Frederick Fasehun;  Olori Ladun Sijuwade, Justice Folake Solanke, and   Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

Others are Senator Kofoworola Bucknor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Dr. Sunny Kuku, Emeritus Prof. Theophilus Ogunlesi, former Archbishop of Lagos province, and Dean of the church of Nigeria(Anglican Communion), Dr. Adebola Ademowo, among others.

The remains of the lawyer were later interred at his Igbeba residence in Ijebu Ode.

President Jonathan Declares Amnesty for Boko Haram

Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Boni Haruna, on Thursday disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan has announced amnesty for members of the Boko Haram sect as parts of his administration's youths-friendly programmes and policies.

Haruna disclosed this while giving an overview of youth's position in the present administration's transformation agenda at a special event tagged "A day with young leaders of Nigeria" to mark the nation's Democracy Day in Abuja.

The minister said series of integration programmes have been lined up for members of the sect who would surrender their arms and embrace peace.

He therefore called on them to embrace the government's gesture.

The minister said, "President Goodluck Jonathan has also declared amnesty for members of the Boko Haram sect.

"Series of integration programmes have been lined up for the members of the sect who would surrender their arms and embrace peace.

"Let me use this opportunity on behalf of the Federal Government, to call on the members of the Boko Haram sect to embrace the government's gesture and key to amnesty programme."

He recalled that in the wake of youth restiveness in the Niger Delta, the government came up with a development programme which provided an opportunity for the youth to express themselves and have a meaningful life.

Haruna said although the amnesty programme was a fallout of a bitter national security, its effect on the youth had been profound.

He disclosed that 30,000 youths have benefitted from the programme which has seen beneficiaries transforming from militants to wealth creators, employers of labour and skilled citizens.

Jonathan, while answering questions from youths who attended the programme, said military alone was incapable of stopping terrorism or any kind of radicalism.

He said terrorism could not succeed in any community without local supports.

He stressed the need for people who are respected by the insurgents to join hands with government to persuade them to desist.

The President said, "Terror succeeds with local support. It will be difficult for terror to thrive where people reject it. It is a major challenge to all of us.

"Military alone cannot stop terror or any radicalism. Terrorists have people they respect, they have community, traditional and opinion leaders they respect. All of us can deradicalise them.

"We will through persuasive activities encourage people to shun violence."

He said his government was already working out the modalities for reintroducing moral education into school curriculum.

This, he said, would assist in re-orientation the young people in order to distinguish between right and wrong things.

Jonathan promised that his administration would continue to encourage young people because they are no longer leaders of tomorrow but of today.

He said youths are already leading because they decide who rules at all levels of government by virtue of their population which he put at 60 per cent of the electorates.

The President also reiterated his position that the nation's income distribution was skewed.

While saying that government was working hard to redistribute wealth, he added that one of the emphasis of the government is to encourage self-employment.

Responding to a question on the need to have a youth as the Minister of Youth Development, Jonathan said "the best person to take care of a child may not necessarily be a child."

He added that the young ones needed to tap from the experiences of older ones.

He also stressed the need for political parties to give women more opportunities.

The event which was held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja was nearly marred by interruption in power supply.

The ugly incident occurred at the time Jonathan mounted the podium to present a compendium of his administration's achievements in the last one year and answer questions from youths who attended the event.

Jonathan remained standing in front of the participants with his security aides for about 15 minutes while the power failure caused by the generating set being used lasted.

He was at the verge of returning to his seat to give organisers time to rectify the fault when power was finally restored.

President of the Senate, David Mark; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, were among dignitaries who were conspicuously absent at the special event.

Among former Heads of State, only the former Head of the Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, attended the event.

He was joined by a former Vice President, Chief Alex Ekwueme; and a former Chief of General Staff, Oladipo Diya.

Jonathan attended the event alongside his wife, Patience; Vice President Namadi Sambo; and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Maryam Mukhtar.

The tone for the event was set by the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed, who narrated the circumstances leading to his appointment as a minister at a young age of 33.

The event featured the presentation of the third anniversary of the present administration's transformation agenda in book form by the President, a video documentary of the third anniversary of the transformation agenda and the launching of Youth Entrepreneurial Mentorship and Empowerment Scheme among others.

Highlight of the event also included a motivational talk by the Chief Executive Officer, Mara Foundation, Mr. Ashish Takker, said to be the youngest African billionaire.
