Lassa fever kills one in Plateau, 5 hospitalised

One person has been confirmed dead and five others are lying critically ill in two hospitals following the outbreak of suspected Lassa fever in Plateau State. Confirming the outbreak of a disease with symptoms similar to that of Lassa fever and the death of one person, the Deputy Director, Epidemiology, in the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Raymond Juryit, said four infected persons were being treated at the Bingham Hospital, Jos, while one person was receiving treatment at a hospital in Jingri in Bassa Local Government Area of the state. He confirmed that one person died of the suspected Lassa fever at Bingham Teaching Hospital, adding that the blood sample of the victim had been taken to another state for testing and confirmation. He assured that the state government was taking necessary steps to prevent a spread of the disease. “We have already communicated with the Ministry of Health to help us with drugs for the treatment of Lassa fever,” he said. He advised people to maintain a clean environment and safeguard food items from rats, which were known to be carriers of the disease. Also, Juryit confirmed that there was fresh outbreak of a communicable disease suspected to be cholera in Rikkos and Nasarawa areas in Jos North Local Government Area of the state as 10 persons were on admission and undergoing treatment. His words: “We got a report of an outbreak of cholera in Panyam in Mangu Local Government Area of the state. Our medical team was deployed to the area and we discovered that it was not a case of cholera but food contamination. “During a sent-forth party for a bride that was held at the community last weekend, a cow was slaughtered and all those who ate the meat started complaining of abdominal pains and some vomited and stooled. He said that 22 persons were hospitalised due to food contamination at the party
