Once you've picked your site host, the next thing you have to deal with is picking the domain name itself - something that can be pretty difficult for a lot of people. If you've not done it before, you might not know what works and what doesn't - in truth it's different for every venture, but these rules of thumb might help you get going. Despite that the important thing, of course, is to make sure that whatever you choose is something that you're happy with; don't let yourself be dissuaded from a good idea just because of some advice from someone who doesn't know your venture as well as you do!
It's a bad idea to use something as a domain name that isn't how your venture is primarily known. Don't go for nicknames, slogans or bylines as primary domain names if you can help it - make sure that you choose the most recognisable way of referring to your business or other venture that you can, rather than getting bogged down by anything else.
Another way to think about it is this - which are the domain names that you would least like it if they were registered by someone else? It's worth registering as many of these domain names as possible, and then potentially having them all point toward the same website. This is an important step in protecting your brand identity, and can be of great help should you ever become involved with trademark registration.
You don't want a website name that people are going to have to write down - you want one that they will remember from having simply heard it once or twice. This means you want something short and snappy, and with a minimum of punctuation and other complications. Acronyms are bad, but a couple of words strung together without any punctuation or similar tends to be a good way of doing it.
4.Avoid Falling Into The Trap Of Long, Unmemorable Domain Names
This is just another ways of putting the point above, really - but it's useful to think about it from both sides. You don't want a name you're using to be too long and unwieldy; people won't use it.
A lot of this advice makes it sound like this is a huge decision, and in a way it is; you're spending money on this, after all, and your domain name is an important part of the marketing and similar. That said, it's definitely possible to change it and to buy something new or stop paying for the one you chose in the first place - it can be awkward to change it, but it can definitely be possible if you'd like to. So don't stress about it all too unduly; there's definitely something that can be done!
